Main areas of research
(1) The impact of insurance coverage on medical consumption and health care
costs, a.o. the disentanglement of the "pure" insurance effect (moral hazard)
from the effects of selection and cost shifting.
(2) The risk adjustment mechanisms necessary for financing health plans
fairly and in such a way that risk selection is avoided. His latest
research in this field centres around using diagnostic information -
deduced from either previous hospitalizations or specific medications -
to improve the risk adjustment system for Dutch health care insurers.
