Research
Quality and safety management is increasingly considered as an essential attribute of hospital care. Many current quality and safety issues are related to organizational characteristics, complexity of the work processes and culture. However, these contributing factors are faced by several other industries as well. Some have advocated the diffusion of innovations from other industries in health care. However, little is known about the applicability of these models in hospital care and its effects on quality and safety outcomes.
Our group studies the applicability of industry approaches (f.e. serious safety gaming, benchmarking, aviation team training, operational excellence of operating rooms, patient safety exit checklist) in health care. The largest part of the studies is conducted at The Rotterdam Eye Hospital, Netherlands. The applicability of benchmarking was studied in 14 eye hospitals in Europe, Asia, Australia and the United States.
